About West Busselton PS

West Busselton Primary School is an Independent Public School and one of four public primary schools located in Busselton. The school opened in 1965 and currently has about 370 students from Kindy to Year Six.

As a public school we follow the Western Australian Curriculum and comply with policies and procedures as set down by the Department of Education.

Teachers plan a learning program to cater for the individual needs of all their students. Students with higher ability or learning difficulties are catered for in the regular classroom. Where necessary, additional support is provided to the teacher by Education Assistants. Parents are informed when their child requires an individualised plan. Teachers in the Early Years also use the Early Years Learning Framework to inform their planning and the school is working towards meeting the National Quality Standards.

We have specialist programs in Drama, Phys Ed and Languages. Each week classes receive an hour of instruction in each of these subjects from specialist teachers. Students learn how to perform and gain confidence in Drama; in Phys Ed they learn the skills necessary and how to play various sports and in Languages they learn how to speak, read and write in Indonesian.

We provide a Speech and Language Program for students in the Early Years who require support with their speech and comprehension development. A speech therapist from Community Health works with our Education Assistant who implements the program at school.

Students have many opportunities to participate in additional activities including beach carnivals and athletics carnivals. The school Triathlon in first term is a much anticipated event. Our annual Talent Quest allows students to shine in the Performing Arts and our TAGS Drama production in term three is always a highlight. In addition our year five and six students can be part of the Instrumental Music program and highly talented and gifted students are catered for in PEAC.

We have high expectations for student behaviour and follow restorative practices in educating our students about appropriate ways to behave and to regulate their own behaviour. We have a Behaviour Expectations Matrix that outlines the behaviours we expect.  This is displayed in classes and explicitly taught by all staff across the school. We have whole school reward programs based around faction points and incentives for students who are

- Being their Best

- Being Responsible

- Being Respectful

- Being Caring

Individual students and factions have opportunity to be recognised for their good behaviour.

Our school buildings are equipped with the latest technology and teachers utilise a range of ICT to enhance their teaching programs. Students have access to devices to create their work and practise skills. The school has subscriptions to online learning programs that students can access at home.

Our school grounds are known for their well maintained gardens, lawns and shady play areas from the many peppi trees. Students have large areas to play in with a variety of playgrounds. The vegetable gardens give students in the Garden Club opportunity to cook their produce and scraps from Crunch and Sip feed the worms and compost.

Our motto is “Believing in Achieving”. We aim to provide the best possible education for each child who attends our school, encouraging them to strive to achieve to their potential.

Our School Vision reflects this:

Caring, reslient, respectful learners who have the 21st century skills to contribute to society and make a difference to the future of our world.
