Student Council

The West Busselton Primary School Student Council is made up of eight students from Year 6.

In the year before, those students who would like to be a Student Councillor have to nominate and then write an application and a speech on why they would make a good Student Councillor and what they could do to make the school a better place. They have to present their speech to the whole school during lunchtime in Term 4. Their written application has to be submitted to the School Admin team.  The Admin then selects who they think would be a suitable Student Councillor. The successful applicants are announced at the last assembly of the year. At the first assembly of the next year, they are presented with their badges.

We have a meeting every Monday to discuss the jobs we have to do for the week.  Some of the jobs we do are putting up the school flag, judging the Golden Shirt Award, presenting our report at each assembly, taking photos at assembly, writing the Student Council report for the school newsletter and organising fundraisers.

Before each assembly,  the Student Councillors go to each class and check that students are wearing the correct school uniform. When checking the uniforms we have a random number. If we land on you and you are wearing the correct uniform, your class gets five bonus points, but if you’re wearing the wrong uniform your class doesn’t get any bonus points. If the whole class has their hats, they get 10 bonus points! When checking uniforms we also judge the classes’ schoolbags to see how tidy they are. We rate them out of ten. The classes with the highest points each time get a sticker to add to their class chart.  The winning class gets the golden shirt to display in their class.

The cleaners also award the Golden Broom for the class that has been kept the cleanest - or the students who have been working hard to keep it tidy.

Throughout the year our school holds fundraisers.  We raise money for our sponsored child in Indonesia - Azaryah.  We have dress up days, sausage sizzles, crazy hair days and even 'wear your pyjamas to school day'!  In previous years the Student Councillors have used the funds raised to concreted the bike compound and purchase a BBQ for the school.

We have been sponsoring a child through World Vision for a long time. In 2014 we said goodbye to Dimas.  We now send letters and cards to Azaryah throughout the year. He writes back to us and we share these in our Indonesian classes.  This year Azaryah  will be turning 7!

To help us be better at our job, we attend a Leadership Camp in Pemberton at the beginning of the year with the councillors from the other Public Schools in the Busselton area.  At camp we learn how to speak in public; what makes a good leader and how to be part of a team.  It is a great camp and lots of fun!
