Measuring Capacity

In Measurement we are focussing on capacity- how much liquid or solids a container can hold. We learnt that measuring capacity is important when you are cooking. We made predictions about what container we thought held the most liquid and then accurately measured out the different containers to see if we were correct. Some of the ways that capacity can be meaured include using tablespoons, measuring cups, millilitres and litre jugs.

Watch It Grow

This term in Science we are focussing on the Life Cycles of Living things. We have 2 different types of animals in our classroom that we are monitoring every day- Tadpoles and Mealworms. Already we have noticed some small changes in their bodies such as little legs growing on the tadpoles and the mealworms shedding their skin. To help us develop a better understanding of these animals we have looked at lots of Non-fiction books and…

Room 17 Prize Shop!

This term Room 17 children have been learning all about money. A classroom shop is set up as the reward system and the children earn lots of money for making the right choices, following instructions and completing amazing work. Room 17 children get to count their money and see if they have enough to go shopping for a special prize. We have some terrific savers and spenders in our class!

Chemical Sciences

In Science this terms Room 17 children have learnt about Chemical Changes. We had a close look at uncooked spaghetti and saw how its properties change when heat is applied. We made funny pictures using the cooked spaghetti. We had fun making Spaghetti towers with the uncooked spaghetti. This week we explored irreversible changes that occur through heating and cooling foods such as bread, chocolate, popcorn and an egg. We now know that heat causes…

Science Fun

To experiment and test our new knowledge of gravity, air and mass the Room 17 children were given a special Easter Science Investigation. We had to plan, design and make a 'parachute' that would stop an egg breaking, when dropped from a height. As a whole class we discussed the different types of materials that would work best and had a lot of fun making our parachutes. Today, we tested our parachutes and dropped them on the hard…

Fantastic Forces

In Room 17 we have had so much fun in Science. We have been looking at the different types of Forces- ‘Pushing and Pulling’. We now understand that 'gravity' is a force and the more mass an object has, the larger it’s gravitational pull! We have completed lots of experiments to test these theories of gravity and see whether an objects shape, size and mass are important. We read a very funny story called Mr Archimedes…

Math's Fun!

In Room 17 we have had a lot of fun learning new Math skills! We have been practising counting by 2’s, 3’s, 5’s and 10 using manipulatives around the classroom. In Measurement we have been learning about length! We have used objects around the classroom as well as our hands and feet to measure the length of particular things. A special activity involved us working in teams using lolly snakes to accurately measure length of…

Crunch and Sip!

In Room 17 we try very hard to keep our body heathy. At ten o’clock every morning we have a quick break from our learning and eat our Crunch and Sip. Our bodies love heathy fruit and vegetables. The children in Room 17 love to eat bananas, apples, peaches, nectarines, watermelon and strawberries! We also know that it is very important to keep our body hydrated in this VERY hot weather, so we try and…

Bouncy Pillow Fun Time

We had sooooooo much fun last week when we went to the bouncing pillow at Beachlands. The children of room 17 earned this reward by getting the most faction points that fortnight. To say they were excited was an understatement! They had a fantastic time and thoroughly wore themselves out. Thanks again to Beachlands for letting us use their pillow for free!

Colour fun!

Last week we got the paints out to explore how make the secondary colours by mixing the primary colours together. The children were very excited to see the changes first hand. We also have great fun carrying out a science experiment using coloured water, it took all night for it to work though!

Maths fun

A few weeks ago we were learning about place value and how they work in a number square. The challenge was set by some of the year 2's - could they put their number square back together quicker than the rest of the class? Who do you think won?

Place Value Activities

In Maths we have been learning about place value in two digit numbers. We have been using popsticks and numeral expanders to make numbers. We understand place value really well now!
A couple of weeks ago we went on an excursion to the Fremantle Literature Centre. It was inside the Fremantle Prison. We learnt lots of interesting things about the history of the prison. The Literature Centre used to be the hospital for the prisioners. We got to look at the real illustrations from some picture books. We made a prediction about what was happening in the story just by looking at all the small details…
