This Thursday is Indonesian Independence Day. The children are finding out just what this means to Indonesia and how they celebrate this most important day. The Garuda, pictured, helps us remember the date. The 17 wing feathers represent the 17th day, the 8 tail feathers represent the 8th month of August and the 45 chest feathers represent the year 1945. So the Indonesian Date of Independence is : 17th August 1945 Selamat Hari Kemerdekaan Indonesia!!

Indonesian Islands

The Year 3's were showing their artistic talents by designing a totem using the name of an Indonesian island. We looked up a map of Indonesia in the atlas and students chose an island. After writing the name on a piece of folded paper they then traced the mirror image and added features to create an interesting 'person'. I was most impressed with their style and creativity.
